What is a DSEAR Zone?

What is a DSEAR Zone?

In our latest blog post, we wanted to make it clear what is defined as ‘a DSEAR Zone?‘ At DSEAR Compliance we think It’s important our clients have a basic understanding of the DSEAR process.

In just a few minutes we hope to make clear the DSEAR zones.

A DSEAR zone contains dangerous substances that may produce an explosive atmosphere. Zones are established by the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 in the UK.

DSEAR zones are classified by the probability and frequency of an explosive atmosphere:

DSEAR Zones

Zone 0: The area where an explosive atmosphere is present continuously, frequently, or for long periods of time is the site of the explosive environment.
Zone 1: A place where an explosive atmosphere is likely to form occasionally during normal operation is expected.
Zone 2: An area where an explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur during normal operation but where it occurs will last only for a short time.

Zones contain hazardous gases, vapours and mists. For combustible dust, similar zones exist.

Identifying DSEAR zones has three main purposes:

Assess the hazards of substances.
Strictly protect people, equipment and the environment.
Identify correct equipment design / installation / maintenance in these areas.
Set out training and competence requirements for personnel working in these zones.

DSEAR zones are one component of hazardous area classification that helps employers meet regulations and maintain a safe work environment.

If companies know such zones they can invest in specialist equipment, procedures and training to limit the risks of working with dangerous substances.

DSEAR zones should be reviewed and reassessed periodically if substances or work practices change. Such continual improvement keeps the work area safe and DSEAR compliant.
